If you need to add a large number of users to your account, you can import them with a .csv file that you have created for this purpose. This feature is available in both SpiderOak Groups and Enterprise.
Create either a .csv file or a plain text file with the extension .txt. You may name this file anything you like. The first line should be the header email,name,group_name
exactly as shown here, without capital letters or spaces. Each subsequent line should contain the corresponding information for each user to be imported. For example:
email,name,group_name john@example.com,John Doe,GroupOne janet@example.com,Janet Smith,GroupTwo josh@example.com,Josh Jones,GroupOne
Be sure to enter each user's information in proper form:
- Each email must contain one @ symbol and must not contain characters prohibited in emails such as spaces. Users may not share the same email.
- Names may contain spaces.
- Each group must be the name of an existing local group. Group names are not case sensitive for the purpose of CSV import. If you wish to import users into a group that does not yet exist, first go to Manage - Manage Groups and create it as a local group.
In the Management Console, go to the Users tab. Click the Add CSV button and you will see something like this:
Select the Choose File button and locate your file. The Management Console will automatically import the values and create each user account. Each user will be emailed a confirmation message with instructions on how to create a password and set up his or her account.
Troubleshooting
If you receive an error message that either email, name, or group_name is required, that indicates that the first line of your file is not exactly as shown above. Confirm that the item mentioned in the error message (email, name, or group_name) it is spelled exactly as shown with no capital letters or spaces.
If you receive an error message stating that either email, name, or group_name is invalid, that means that one of the per-user lines contains an invalid email, name, or group_name. You will need to review each line to find and correct the invalid entry. As you do so, keep in mind the guidelines above on proper form.
If you receive an error message stating "email already in use", you are attempting to import a user with the same email as either an existing user or someone else in the CSV. Emails must be unique and cannot be shared.
If you receive an error message stating "invalid group", that means that you are attempting to assign a user to a group that does not yet exist. Perhaps the CSV contains a typographical error, or perhaps you first have to create the desired group. In the latter case, that is done at Manage - Manage Groups.
If you receive an error message stating "group name must be a local group", that means that you are attempting to assign a user to an LDAP group. Just as when you add users one by one, CSV-imported users can only be assigned to local groups. You can review your groups at Manage - Manage Groups.
The import process is halted upon finding any error, and the error message mentions it and nothing else. There may be subsequent errors in the file.
The CSV import process is all or nothing. If you receive an error message, the process is terminated without importing anything.
